How to Choose a Plastic Surgeon in India

A compact guide for international patients

Choosing a plastic surgeon in another country calls for more than comparing photographs, reviews or prices. If you are considering surgery in India, first establish who will perform your procedure, what their training covers, where the operation will take place, and how your recovery will be supported after you travel home.

Start with qualifications, not a label

In India, an established specialist training route is MBBS, MS (General Surgery) and MCh (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery). Terms such as “cosmetic surgeon” or “board-certified” do not, on their own, establish Indian specialist qualifications. Ask for the doctor’s full registered name and registration number, and check these against the National Medical Commission or relevant state medical council.

Use consultation to assess judgement

A useful consultation explains why a procedure suits your anatomy and health, what results are realistic, and when an alternative — or no operation— may be preferable. Video consultations can begin the discussion before travel, but the final plan normally follows an in-person assessment.

Look beyond the operating day

Ask where surgery will occur, who will administer anaesthesia, what monitoring and emergency arrangements are available, and how complications would be managed. Clarify the full quotation, postoperative reviews, local accommodation needs and follow-up after returning home. Do not book a fixed return date before discussing recovery and fitness to fly.
