Eyes provide us with the ability to see and also to express our feelings. Saggy skin on our eyelids and the bags under the eyes make us look tired, aged and dull. Aging causes the skin to lose elasticity, and the constant pull of gravity makes the excessive skin to collect on the lower and upper eyelids. With eyelid surgery (also known as blepharoplasty), one can tighten the excess sagging skin around the eyes to obtain a more refreshed look.
Blepharoplasty is relatively a hassle-free surgical procedure and can be performed using local anesthesia. Various people suffer from sagging of extra eyelid tissue resulting in the blocking of vision, and requires immediate medical attention. Eyelid surgery can help to improve the quality of life of such patients.
What can be corrected with Blepharoplasty?
Who is eligible for Blepharoplasty?
Always discuss your goals, medical history and current medication (if you are taking any), previous surgeries with your surgeon. Physical examination, tear production test, vision examination, and photographs of your eyes are taken from different angles to observe the difference both before and after the procedure.
The surgery encompasses a number of different surgical techniques on the basis of evaluation of factors such as underlying facial muscles structure, skin elasticity, eyebrows symmetry, structure of the bone, skin type, and age of the candidate. These factors will help decide the amount of muscle, fat, and skin to be removed during the surgery. The surgery can be performed in upper or lower eyelids or both. It may take 1 to 2 hours depending upon the target areas.
One can also undergo a facelift, brow lift along with eyelid surgery to achieve an overall facial rejuvenation.
The complications and risks are rare. Usually, a little pain is involved in the surgery and swelling, or bruising can occur after surgery. Dry eyes, light sensitivity, not being able to close their eyes fully, infection, blurred vision, bleeding, pulled-down lower lid lash line are some possible complications from eyelid surgery. However, these are only temporary and if one feels severe pain or uncomfortable they must visit their plastic surgeon.
